Beatboxing is a form of vocal percussion primarily involving the art of mimicking drum machines (typically a TR-808), using one’s mouth, lips, tongue, and voice. It may also involve singing or rapping. Beatboxing is often used as a form of expression and as part of hip hop music. While a basic beatbox can be pulled off by everyone, it is an art to get timing and pronunciation right. If you don’t have the skills and don’t want to invest the time, here’s a couple great beatbox sample packs if you want to inject some beatboxing into your drum and percussion tracks.
Mouthin Off VST
Mouthin’ Off is a freeware beatbox virtual instrument by Reflekt Audio. It comes in VST, VST3, and AU plugin formats for digital audio workstation software on PC and Mac.
Mouthin’ Off is a sample-based virtual instrument featuring 164 royalty-free beatbox sounds. You know, the type of drum sounds people make with their mouths. The “boom!” kicks, the “pfft!” snares, and the “tssk!” hi-hats. These are often performed live as a backing track for freestyle rappers, but once you import them into your DAW, the experimentation possibilities are endless.
The developer recorded and edited all of the included beatbox sounds from scratch. The samples are sorted into five categories: kicks, snares, hi-hats, percussion, and sound effects and can be used as one shots as well – like other beatbox sample packs. Reflekt Audio kept the recorded samples as clean and raw as possible. The user can add their own effects and processing to the beatbox sounds performed with Mouthin’ Off.
Obviously, the plugin can be used for creating beatbox-style drum beats using a MIDI sequencer. But natural drum sounds like this can also work well for layering with drum machine samples and even acoustic drum kit sounds. Mouthin’ Off is available for free download via Reflekt Audio’s website. The software is available as a VST, VST3, and AU plugin for 32-bit and 64-bit DAW applications. To download your free copy of Mouthin’ Off, visit the product page linked below and complete the free checkout process. The plugin will be added to your Reflekt Audio user account (unlimited number of downloads). The download pack contains the DLL that is ready to be added to your VST plugin folder. Software activation is not required.
