Modalics has just introduced Plugin Buddy, a versatile free plugin host designed to tackle a variety of tasks. Whether it’s running VST3 plugins in Pro Tools, chaining MIDI effects with instruments, or processing multiple plugins simultaneously.

At its core, Plugin Buddy is a VST3 host for both macOS and Windows. It can operate as a plugin inside any DAW or function as a standalone application, offering flexibility for different workflows.

One of its key advantages is cross-platform compatibility, making it easier and faster to work with plugins regardless of the host format. Plugin Buddy can load VST3 plugins within AU and AAX environments, broadening its usability.

Another powerful feature is the ability to create custom chains of MIDI effects, instruments, and processors without being tied down by DAW or plugin format limitations. You can load up to four MIDI plugins alongside any instrument, allowing for creative experimentation with minimal setup.

Is this the start of DAWless jamming? Maybe. Plugin Buddy’s design eliminates DAW loading times, letting you jump straight into your instruments with no delay, which promises a “zero latency” experience. You can even create complex plugin chains that behave like brand-new instruments, unlocking fresh potential from your existing collection.

The tool comes equipped with several free built-in plugins, including MIDI utilities, a synthesizer, a low-pass filter, and a clipper. It also features a dynamic visualizer that provides real-time audio and MIDI pitch and velocity feedback.

For those interested in a deeper dive, Modalics has released a 12-minute YouTube tutorial showcasing Plugin Buddy’s core functions.

While this plugin host won’t be necessary for everyone, those who need this kind of functionality will find it a valuable addition, especially considering it’s completely free.

To get your copy, head over to the product page and click the “Claim for Free” button. Modalics will ask you to create an account using just your name and email. Although the website mentions potential delays in generating installer links, both macOS and Windows installers were instantly available during my recent experience.

If you enjoy Plugin Buddy, you might want to check out the rest of the Modalics store. They’re currently offering up to 33% off individual products and even bigger discounts on bundles.
