Looking for that legendary Pultec EQ sound without breaking the bank? Analog Obsession has just released Poortec, a free EQ plugin that brings that classic sound to your DAW.
Released this Friday for both macOS (VST3, AU, AAX) and Windows (VST3, AAX), the Poortec takes inspiration from the legendary Pultec EQP-1A. The interface and six main controls closely mirror those of the original unit, which revolutionized studio equalizers when it launched in 1951 as the first passive program EQ.
Analog Obsession has taken an interesting approach with this emulation. Rather than creating a direct clone, they’ve developed a streamlined version that omits the SRPP gain stage and inductors of the original. Instead, they’ve implemented a Fairchild-style vintage line amplifier to boost the signal after the passive EQ stage.
The plugin features both low and high-frequency bands, with the low end offering additional frequency options for the famous Pultec “low-end trick.” The high band provides simultaneous shelving boost and cut capabilities at the same frequency – a characteristic feature of the original unit that, while technically discouraged in the manual, became a go-to technique for engineers.
A notable addition is the trim pot (TP) control in the bottom right corner. This gain stage circuit can drive the signal harder, adding character and enhanced transients to your sound. The interface is rounded out with a clean master output and a bypass switch.

While many developers have created Pultec emulations with premium price tags, this free offering presents an excellent opportunity to explore the legendary Pultec sound.
