Something special is sounding off at our London campus – quite literally. pointblank Lecturer James Malone has been developing a unique generative ambient music installation designed to provide a peaceful sonic environment right in the heart of the city. Occurring at the school hub, the piece offers students and staff a calming space to relax, reset, or simply pause between busy schedules.

The installation is crafted using Pure Data, an audiovisual programming language. It is entirely generative and evolves continuously throughout the day, meaning the soundscape never repeats in exactly the same way. Whether you’re actively listening, using it as a subtle background to your study session, or simply walking through the space, the music adapts to fit the moment – much like a living, breathing environment.

Drawing inspiration from ambient music pioneers such as Brian Eno and Erik Satie, James has incorporated soft synth pads, melodic bell tones, and soothing nature sounds, including birdsong and running water, some recorded in the Welsh countryside and along the River Wye. The result is a thoughtful and immersive blend of natural and electronic elements, designed to help ease the pressure of student life.

This project also doubles as a creative learning tool. James plans to bring it into pointblank’s Advanced Sound Design module, giving students the chance to explore generative systems hands-on and understand how ambient compositions can be built using software like Pure Data and PlugData.

Whether you’re dropping in for a mindful moment or keen to learn how it all works, the installation is a perfect example of how sound design can create meaningful spaces. Next time you’re at our London campus, step inside and experience it for yourself.
